She only stayed in Arizona for three months before realizing she wanted to return home to California. When you say you're from California, they think of LA, San Francisco, and San Diego. I'm a retired police dispatcher and believe crime needs to be punished, and I don't think it is here in California. But I don't live politics every day, and they did. When you're born and raised in California, you need to be in California.

Opinion | Can Judge Cannon Preside Fairly Over the Trump Trial?

JahnsHemet, Calif. To the Editor:I was as disgusted as anyone by Judge Aileen M. Cannon’s ruling last year awarding Donald Trump a special master to review documents seized by the Justice Department. I think it would be appropriate for her to recuse herself based on the appearance of bias she has created, along with the fact of being a Trump appointee. We liberals have no right to criticize the polarized state of American politics if we refuse to examine and report on both sides of any given issue fairly. Steve BenkoSouthport, Conn.To the Editor:We should think very carefully about whether Judge Aileen M. Cannon has a conflict of interest in adjudicating a criminal matter involving the president who appointed her. While other judges have presided over cases involving the presidents who appointed them, this one presents unprecedented issues of law, politics and legal ethics.

Jan 26 (Reuters) - Los Angeles-area investigators have found no connection between the victims of a mass shooting at a Monterey Park, California, dance hall and the elderly man who carried out the massacre last weekend, authorities said. On Monday, a gunman killed seven people at two mushroom farms in the coastal Northern California city of Half Moon Bay. Investigators did find a motorcycle registered to the suspect parked one block from the dance hall. After carrying out the shooting at the dance hall, Tran drove a short time later to a second dance hall in Alhambra, where that club's operator disarmed him before he could open fire. He purchased that gun in 1999 but it was not registered with the state of California, Luna said.
SAN GABRIEL, Calif. — The elderly gunman responsible for the dance hall massacre in Monterey Park was out of step with other Asian immigrants who found joy and companionship in venues like the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, former friends said. “His ex-wife also likes to dance, so, many times, they would bump into each other in the party or at events. I don’t think his ex-wife was the cause of his massacre.”Nevertheless, Tran often blamed his ex-wife for the demise of his trucking business. Records show that Tran registered a business called Tran’s Trucking in Monterey Park in 2002 and that it was dissolved two years later. He also recalled seeing a white van parked on the modest property, not unlike the one in which Tran died.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was visiting wounded survivors from Saturday night's massacre in the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park when he was informed of Monday's killings in northern California. A semi-automatic handgun was found in his car, San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus told an evening news conference. It ranked as the deadliest mass shooting ever in Los Angeles County, according to Hilda Solis, a member of the county Board of Supervisors. Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese said investigators were looking into unconfirmed reports that the violence may have been precipitated by jealousy or relationship issues.
It is exceedingly rare for a person over 70 to carry out a mass shooting. Flowers are left near the scene of a shooting that took place during a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration, in Monterey Park, California, U.S. January 22, 2023. Police in Monterey Park had no prior interactions with Tran, Chief Scott Wiese said at a news conference on Monday. He lived in San Gabriel, near Monterey Park, from the early 1990s until around 2014, records show. A vigil will be held Tuesday in Monterey Park in memory of the dead. And about a dozen hours after the bloodshed in Monterey Park, police tracked Tran's white van to a car park 30 miles away in the suburb of Torrance where the suspect killed himself. "I tried to reach her, but I didn't get any response," Monterey Park resident Vivian King said of a friend she last heard from earlier in the weekend.
Over three dozen Regal Cinemas locations in the US are expected to close. Cineworld detailed the plan to reject the leases starting February 15 in a new bankruptcy filing on Tuesday. Regal is the second-largest cinema chain in the US, behind AMC, with over 500 theaters. The company's plan to close locations during its bankruptcy is fairly routine. Cineworld filed for bankruptcy at a time when the larger theatrical industry is struggling to fully rebound from the pandemic.
